Build off Your Child's Existing Knowledge
Step #2 in our Montessori Phonics Series
Following in the footsteps of our Step #1 phonics toy, the Spin-and-Read Blocks, this Magic Spin-E Blocks set continues the fun & exploration of spinning letter blocks. Step #2 features a dual E-blank block which allows children to create CVC words and TRANSFORM it into its CVCe version.
In this set, children build off their prior phonics knowledge and put to practice the Silent E phonics rule, equipping them with fluency to know when to use the SHORT vs. LONG vowel sound.
As in Step #1, Step #2 follows Montessori principles of self-discovery & correction. Children have the freedom to create new words, but within the limits of CVC & CVCe words. This empowers new readers instead of overwhelming them with unfamiliar spelling patterns and sight words they may not yet be ready for.
A wipe-clean board and matching cards offer even more ways to practice through writing, spelling, and categorizing. Categorizing CVC, CVC+E, and nonsense words improves decoding skills and diminishes the reliance on memorization.

Frequently asked questions
We recommend children to already know their letter sounds and the basics of how to read a 3-letter CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) word. This allows them to just focus first on the most common type of sound that a vowel makes in a word.
Silent E introduces some "MAGIC" to the reading and involves a little bit more maneuvering within a word. While the job of silent E is pretty straightforward, it is ideal that your child is already comfortable with knowing how to blend letter sounds together first. We recommend starting with our STEP 1 "Spin-and-Read Blocks" to accomplish this! Thereafter, this Magic Spin-E Blocks set is a perfect next step in their reading journey.
101 REAL words can be created with the wooden rods. 45 are CVCe words & 56 CVC words.
Of the 128 words that can be created with the letters on the rods, 27 of these are not real words. However, nonsense words are actually really beneficial for learning reading. Engaging with nonsense words allows children to continue working on their decoding skills instead of just memorizing what a real word looks like. They help children slow down to break up a word into its phonemes (AKA its individual sound). This provides necessary practice for learning out how to sound out unfamiliar words.
The wipe-clean board further allows children to categorize between real and nonsense words and to become more familiarized with recognizing words of the English language. Lastly, some of the nonsense words in this set actually exist as part of a longer REAL word. Our Instruction Sheet provides a list of such words (such as the nonsense word "mit" in "limit").
While this set does not come with a free worksheet set, you can most definitely check out our Silent E Worksheet set for our supplementary practice. It features 27 fun and engaging pages of reading and writing practice - and provides lots of practice for matching, categorizing, and deducing.
This Magic E set only has 4 rods vs. 5 rods in our Spin-and-Read Blocks set. This is because there are very few CVCe words that have both a letter E in the middle and end of the word.
Since our blocks are made with completely solid wood, versus MDF or plastic, there will be natural variations to the cut of each individual block and how it fits together with its partnering blocks. Each block is unique with character, so please note this does not operate like a machine-made plastic toy!
If the rotation of your blocks is slightly tight, it can be loosened by turning the blocks several times back and forth or lightly knocking it on its side. Humidity levels can cause wood to expand at times.
If the rods are still too tight, please contact us!
If there are any issues with your set, please contact us right away! We will be happy to make it right for you!
Designed for Little Hands & the EArth
Our wooden blocks are cut and finished off with a smooth, beveled edge for the upmost comfort in your child's hands. The length of our Magic-E Blocks are the same as our Spin-and-Read rods, yet with 4 blocks instead of 3. Keeping the same rod length allows children to also hold and spin the blocks easily for this Silent E set.
Everything in this set is safe and non-toxic and certified by TÜV SÜD, a global regulatory compliance company, to exceed toy safety regulations in the US, Canada, U.K., EU, Australia, and New Zealand.
Take care of the earth by choosing sustainably-harvested wooden toys that extend past the life of many plastic toys. We choose beech wood for its extreme hardiness and beauty.
